Original radiant cut diamond rings were invented by Henry Grossbard in 1977. He wanted to create a cut that had the elegant shape of an emeralds, with the light reflecting brilliance and sparkle of a diamond. His cut revitalized the popularity of square and rectangular diamonds.

Before the radiant cut was invented, all straight edged diamond cuts had long rectangular facets, called a step cut. Step cuts make diamonds look glassy. Rounded edge diamonds were cut using triangular facets, which is what gives the glittery appearance to round brilliants, pear shaped diamonds, and so on. Radiant cut diamonds are cut using both techniques, resulting in a ‘brilliantized step cut’ that reflects light like no other diamond available.

It needs a special prong setting to secure the corners properly and keep the stone in place. Unlike a princess cut, there is no danger of chipping because the corners are trimmed.

There are many generic radiant cut diamond rings available, but they are not cut to the same standard as the original. Make sure to ask your jeweller if the carry original radiant cuts, and ask to see one beside a generic radiant cut…the difference is remarkable. All original radiant diamonds will come with a certificate that guarantees their authenticity. the certificate will be numbered, and that same number will also be laser inscribed on the girdle of the diamond itself. No number means the diamond is a generic cut.
